  • About the Project
We supplied 3.5 km of MashFlex guardrail, installed with driven sleeves, along with 1.2 km of Ezy-Guard and 8 Soft-Stop end terminals for the Ruby Bay Bypass project. This significant infrastructure initiative aimed to improve the route between Motueka and Nelson by realigning State Highway 60 (SH60) inland, away from the townships of Mapua and Ruby Bay. The project addressed several key issues, including inconsistent speed limits, coastal erosion, and the high number of access points—145 in total—on the original road.

Constructed between October 2008 and April 2012, with an estimated project cost between $20 million and $100 million, the Ruby Bay Bypass has provided a safer and more efficient route for daily commuters traveling between Richmond, Motueka, and Nelson. It has also alleviated traffic pressure on the previous coastal road. The new bypass spans 10.7 kilometers, including a 9-kilometer section built on former forestry land, allowing construction to proceed without disrupting the existing highway. Designed as a limited-access road, the bypass reduces safety risks by limiting direct property access, ensuring fewer entry and exit points. This project supports regional development in line with the Tasman District Council’s district plan, following on from the earlier Maisey Road to Trafalgar Road project completed in 1999.
