ET-SS MASH Guardrail End Terminal

The MASH compliant ET-SS is the next generation of guardrail end terminal and is compliant to Test Level 3. The terminal is available for two installation methods, the primary method is with the posts driven into the ground via an hydraulic post driver. The alternative method is with baseplated posts anchored to a concrete footing, this is an option for the TL3 and TL2 configurations.

The MASH testing standard uses heavier vehicles and a wider range of impact angles for terminal testing, including 5˚ and 25˚ impacts. This results in a significant increase in impact energy when compared to the old NCHRP-350 terminal testing. The current Australian Standard AS/NZS 3845.1:2015 Road Safety Barrier Systems nominates MASH as the basis of testing procedures for road safety barrier systems.

The ET-SS system uses a proprietary head with front anchored technology to anchor the W-Beam from the loads exerted on the rail during an end-on or side vehicle impacts on the terminal. This front anchor also minimises the deflection of the downstream guardrail system to help contain and redirect an errant vehicle.

From end-on impacts within the MASH criteria, the W-Beam guardrail is flattened as it is guided through the head to the front anchor, this absorbs impact energy from the errant vehicle bringing it to a controlled and gradual stop.

The system has been fully crash tested to MASH TL3 and MASH TL2 as a re-directive, gating end terminal.

Features:

  • Tall and narrow impact head maximises the shy-line offset and saves on valuable verge width.
  • 100% galvanized steel head and posts, designed for superior durability.
  • The ET-SS head has the potential to be reused after impact. The ultimate decision of reusability rests with the specifying transportation authority.
  • Unique anchorage design allows guardrail run to remain anchored during end on impacts, when impacted according to MASH Test Level 3 (TL3) guidelines.

Assembly Advantages:

  • Splices at mid-span of the posts allow for easy assembly.
  • Extruded rail is flattened and maintains connection to unit for quicker repair and clean-up.
  • All steel design minimises debris often found with wood post options.
  • Optional protection cover to help reduce the risks to vulnerable road users when impacting the front of the terminal.

 Specifications:

  • Rail Height - 787mm
  • Impact Head Width – 180mm
  • System Length - TL-3: 15.48m
  • Post Spacing From Post 2 through Post 8 – 1.905m
  • Length of Need - Starts at post #3 for TL3 and post #2 for TL2

The ET-SS end terminal is available in two sizes. The compact 7.89m MASH Test Level 2 terminal is an economical solution for application for posted speeds up to 70km/h. The standard 15.48m MASH Test Level 3 terminal is acceptable for all posted speeds greater than 70km/h.
